Weymouth and Portland National Sailing Academy

What a venue! The Academy opened in 2000 and aimed to promote sailing to all levels of competence and ability.

With direct access to Weymouth Bay waters and Portland Harbour the venue at Osprey Quay will host the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic sailing events. The conditions here are considered near to perfect as it is exposed to winds from all directions, but still sheltered by large waves by Chesil Beach.

To accommodate for the Olympics in addition to the world class facilities already at the venue (conference and meeting facilities, sailing school, boat hoist and storage…) The Olympic Delivery Authority a 220m slipway that is available at all tides and winds as well as and extra 70 berths and extended dingy park with an impressive capacity of 600 boats.

Hope to see you down there on charter!

Round The Island Race 2012 update!

Entries are now open for the Round the Island Race which takes place on 30th June 2012.

Now the 4th largest annual sporting event in the UK the J.P. Morgan Round the Island Race regularly attracts around 1700 boats and 16000 participants. The course covers 50nm round the Isle of Wight starting from the Royal Yacht Squadron at Cowes heading west.

Solent Events are offering a full race package this year. On arrival on 29th June we will introduce your skipper and crew before some familiarisation sailing over to Cowes. Once moored in Cowes you will have plenty of time to visit the race village with bars and live music. The 30th June will be an early start as weather permitting racing starts at 0600am.  Once completing the route you will return to Cowes for a celebratory dinner. A not so early start on the Sunday, we will sail back to the mainland at the groups’ leisure. Take a look at the race overview, and if you would like Solent Events to get you out on the water simply contact us.

To add to the excitement of being part of this event, you should also be aware you would be racing against Olympic Sailor Ben Ainslie! JP Morgan who is a sponsor of Ainslie as well as RTIR will be taking part on the Beneteau First 40 Winston (GBR 2806L); the only time he will be competing outside of the Finn class before the Olympics.

Ben Ainslie…

Hasn’t had much luck lately. The Olympic sailor was disqualified from the World Championship Race in Perth just before Christmas resulting in him dropping from 1st to 11th place ending his hopes of becoming Finn World Champion for the sixth time.

His disqualification has caused a little controversy; Yachting Monthly had an online poll asking should Ainslie have been disqualified, 77% said no, with Sir Robin Knox-Johnston asking ‘What were the organisers doing letting media boats on the course and being able to get in the way of competitors?’

Lets hope the RYA decide not to take any further action… would be a great shame to see the media get in the way of more world class sailing for the sake of few photos!

Want to be an Olympic Sailor?

In around 200 days the world’s elite sailors will take to the waters of Weymouth and Portland in the hope of taking home a gold medal.

BUT have no fear!… it is simple with Solent Events to get out on the water just for a day or two where you can experience what it may like to be part of this prestigious sailing event  for yourself!

Based from the Weymouth and Portland National Sailing Academy Solent Events have various options are available on a fleet of F40 yachts; an ideal day for networking, incentives, reward, teambuilding or simply hospitality.
